The review guides are based on the Québec Education Program, as suggested by the ministère de l'Éducation du Québec (MEQ).
The content detailed here is suggested, but not compulsory. They serve to clarify the knowledge that students should acquire during the first cycle of elementary school.
Here are the concepts suggested for the Science and Technology Program at the end of the first cycle of elementary school.
Properties and characteristics of matter
Classify objects using their properties (e.g. colour, shape, size, texture, smell).
Classify materials (e.g. fabrics, sponge, paper) according to their degree of absorption.
Differentiate materials that are permeable to water from those that are not.
Differentiate translucent substances from opaque substances.
Mixtures
Recognize mixtures in their environment (e.g. air, juice, salad dressing, soup, raisin bread).
Differentiate a mixture of miscible liquids from a mixture of immiscible liquids.
Differentiate a water-soluble substance from a substance that is not water-soluble.
States of matter and changes of state
Distinguish the three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas).
Recognize water in solid, liquid, and gaseous state.
Describe the operations to transform water from one state to another (heating or cooling).
Determine the state of various objects and substances.
Conservation of matter
Recognize that the quantity of material remains the same during a change (e.g. flattened or balled modeling clay).
Common household products
Associate the uses of certain household products with their properties.
Recognize commonly used products that are potentially dangerous (safety pictograms).
Magnetism
Recognize the effects of magnetism in magnets.
Identify situations in which magnets are used.
Effects of the force of friction
Identify situations where the force of friction is present.
Everyday technical objects
Describe the parts and mechanisms that make up an object.
Identify the needs that an object was originally designed to meet.
Precipitation and natural water sources
Describe different types of precipitation (rain, snow, hail, freezing rain).
Identify natural sources of fresh water (streams, lakes, rivers) and natural sources of salt water (seas, oceans).
The Sun-Earth-Moon system
Associate the Sun with the idea of a star, the Earth with the idea of a planet and the Moon with the idea of a natural satellite.
Describe the influence of the position of the Sun on the length of shadows.
Seasons
Describe changes that occur in one’s environment over the seasons (temperature, daylight, type of precipitation).
Explain the sensations experienced (hot, cold, comfortable) related to the temperature.
Functions of body parts
Describe the functions of certain parts of one’s anatomy (e.g. limbs, head, heart, stomach).
Needs of a plant
Name the essential needs for the growth of a plant (water, air, light, mineral salts).
Animal nutrition
Compare the diet of domestic animals with that of wild animals.
How animals adapt to their environment
Describe the physical characteristics that demonstrate how animals adapt to their environment.
Describe the behaviours of familiar animals that enable them to adapt to their environment.
Use of living things for consumption
Give examples of how living things are used (e.g. meat, vegetables, wood, leather).
Food production
