Demystifying summer school

What is summer school?

Sometimes, despite their best efforts, a student may not receive a passing grade in a course. Rather than repeating the year, your child could just redo the course during the summer.

Summer school overview:

  • Most school boards offer summer courses.
  • Some schools reserve summer school for students with a final grade of 50 to 59 percent.
  • Depending on the school board, summer courses may include History, French, English, Science, and Mathematics.
  • Summer courses are held Monday to Friday for two to three hours per day.
  • Classes generally run from mid-July to early August.
  • Courses end with an exam.
  • Taking summer courses is not mandatory to take the exam. However, it is strongly encouraged.

Be careful!

Exceptionally, during the 2023-2024 school year, summer school will be free for Secondary 4 and 5 students.

How do I register?

After failing a subject, a student will receive a letter with their third report card suggesting that they attend summer school.

Keep the following in mind:

  • You can sign up in early summer on a registration day organized by the school board.
  • Be prepared to pay a registration fee.
  • A guidance counsellor may be available on registration day to answer your questions.
